The Story of Wilf and the Carnival Band

The Words of Wilf’s Great Grandma “Wilf was a lovely little lad, always smiling, and a brave little boy.” He touched the hearts of so many people, even those who did not know him personally”.  Wilf’s Story Wilfred James Matthews was born in August 2011 at the Royal Shrewsbury hospital. Unfortunately Wilf was born with Acromicric Geleophysic Dysplasia, an extremely rare genetic disorder. This causes a complex range of health issues, the most critical of which affects breathing. Consequently Wilf spent a significant amount of his 3 years at Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH), some of which was in Intensive Care. Sadly on Friday 5th September 2014 Wilf died. The condition is extremely debilitating but does not affect intellect, consequently Wilf did live a full life in his three short years, he was learning how to communicate, he liked music and could tell his family that his favourite song was “The Wheels on the Bus”, his favourite colour was red. He was featured on a BBC documentary about the Chaplains of Birminghams Childrens Hospital. On the programme he was shown playing jokes on the nurses and going on a trip to the seaside, playing in the sea and eating ice cream. Acorns Hospice Worcester Wilf had a number of wonderful visits and weekend stays at the Acorns hospice in Worcester. He loved the multi-sensory playroom, and the craft activities. Wilf also got the chance to swim in the specialist hydrotherapy pool and play with his sister Violet in the gardens. The Ukulele Four members of the Worcester Ukulele Club led by Patrick Tansey visit Acorns on a regular basis, play the ukulele and sing for the children and staff, this is how we met Wilf and his family. Wilf liked the ukulele and our songs and as a result we were invited to play and sing at his memorial service which was called Wilfs Carnival, hence Wilf’s Carnival Band was born. Footnote The bands name is in memory of this brave young boy and his equally brave sister and parents. There is one song we play at all our gigs as a tribute to them all, one we used to play to them all at Acorns, called “This Little Light of Mine”. .
